Messina has been entirely rebuilt after the 1908 earthquake
(the most destructive outside of Asia) and the Allied bombing of 1943
The astronomical clock is one of the main attractions.
Its performance at noon normally lasts for 20 minutes,
but when I was there this was reduced to 10 minutes due to repair work.
It was nevertheless very impressive, especially the roaring lion, the cockerel and the Ave Maria
which you can hear on YouTube by clicking the links on the line above!
...Although the roaring lion doesn't really come out as well as at the cathedral...
and the out of focus bits at the beginnings of these video clips were sharp on my originals.
