14-20 inches long with a 43-47 inch wingspan, Barn Owls ar distinguished by their large white, heart-shaped faces. They hunt (primarily rodents) in meadows and pastures.
Barn owls have the most acutely developed sense of hearing of all owls. They can pinpoint prey with 100% accuracy in total darkness. They can hear a mouse's footsteps on packed earth, 30 yards away. Many farmers welcome the presence of these "mousers."
Monogamous, barn owls roost and nest in barns and other old buildings, tree hollows, church steeples, and in holes in banks and cliffs. They breed 1-3 times a year and are listed as "threatened" in some states.
