General Anderson was CO of the Ninth Air Force at the time of this picture. He graduated from West Point in 1928 and retired from the Air Force in 1963 with the rank of four-star general. Around the time this picture was taken, Anderson was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for leading his Bombardment Wing on two combat missions flying B-26 medium bombers. In this picture, General Anderson was apparently paying a ceremonial visit to the hospital to which my father was assigned.
