In 1865, the Englishman Edward Whymper became the first person to climb the Matterhorn. In the aftermath of his achievement, Zermatt became a Mecca for English hikers and mountainclimbers; this is a tradition which continues today. In the late 19th century, there was such a large influx of English people to Zermatt that an Anglican church was established in the town. Although it's a bit strange to see an English church in the middle of the Alps, it's just as picturesque as the rest of the town.
