Most of these photos are of Aachen Cathedral, where Charlemagne was crowned in the 760's. The building was begun in the mid-700's and is basically intact. This astounding building is odd in its design; unlike most cathedrals, it isn't shaped like a cross -- it's an octagon. The remarkable condition, unusual design, tremendous age, and unique history make this cathedral one of a kind.
