Thanks Jean. No actually, Polar Bears fast during the summer months when they are not on the ice and able to hunt seals. The blood on his coat probably came from sparring with another bear a short time ago. It is true that in summer the bears may get an occasional meal (or visit the Churchill garbage dump - but the authorities take measures against that); but they are fasting over the summer. This is sometimes referred to as "walking hibernation".
