69th Anniversary of the Battle of Britain

From 1940-July to October, following the fall of France on 1940-June-22, the Battle of Britain was fought in the skies over Britain. The Axis powers of Germany and Italy attempted to establish "Air Superiority" over Britain in advance of an invasion. Participating in the Battle of Britain were 2,331 British fighter pilots, 145 Poles, 127 New Zealanders, 112 Canadians (including RCAF 1 Squadron - later 401 Squadron), 88 Czechoslovakians, 28 Belgians, 32 Australians, 25 South Africans, 13 French, 7 American, 10 Irish, and one each from Jamaica, the British Mandate of Palestine, and Southern Rhodesia. Winston Churchill, remarking on the role of Fighter Command in the Battle of Britain famously commented: "Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few". On 2009-September-20, a commemoration wreath laying and Fly Past was held at the Canadian National Aviation Museum attended by The British High Commissioner, The Canadian Minister of Defence, other officials and Honoured Veterans.
