Tests about manual 135mm lenses I have used on the XE1

This gallery currently includes tests images from the Asahi S-M-C Takumar 1:3.5 and the Mamiya-Sekor CS 1:2.8.

The resolution of those lenses is roughly 2/3rd the resolution of the Fuji FX 18-55 at 18mm.

1. Mamiya-Sekor. I use the MS wide open only because I can't change the aperture. I will do my best to summarize my experience with the lens. The resolution is basically 2/3 the sensor resolution although contrasty features from flat objects may sometimes look crisp if not neat at full resolution whith heavy sharpening. The lens has a tiny depth of field at 2.8 and is not easy to focus precisely hand held. The lens can show some extra features when shooting random subjects: some light and correctable color fringing, bokeh fringing (from strong sources), and bokeh cat eye. Purple fringing may appear in the center of the frame on small darker stems against a bright snow; the coloration is not normally visible but it may pop up if too much color saturation is applied in PP. The lens is quite immune to ghosting from strong sources inside the field of view, but sources of light just on the fringe may induce some. In short the lens can produce contrasty pictures wide open but it suffers from all kinds of small scale defects. Expect to end up with half resolution (2000x1600) pictures on digital.

2. Takumar. Although the Tak has a resolution in the same range as the MS at least from from the charts I have done, the quality of the image stopped down is much better for general use and for post-processing. There is color fringing when pushing the saturation to the extreme, but it is generally not a factor; I have been able to increase the saturation in postprocessing quite a lot before the color aberrations start to pop in. I have a good percentage of keepers from that lens.
