It was surprising to see this bird in Maui. They normally range from the eastern United States to the southern parts. They are not a resident of the Pacific Northwest, so it was a treat to catch a glimpse of one.
They were introduced in 1929 when a caged bird escaped on O'ahu, later deliberate introductions followed. The bird is now a fixture in gardens and forests across the Hawaiian Islands.
They are territorial and will aggressively repel intruders, often mistakenly attacking their own
reflections in car mirrors or windows.
