Hawai'i 'Amakihi

Chlorodrepanis virens

Another native honeycreeper endemic to the summit area of Haleakala volcano is the Amakihi.
It is found on Maui, Hawai’i island and Moloka’i but is extinct on the other islands.
It eats nectar, fruit pulp, insects and tree sap. This bird may be developing resistance to avian malaria unlike other native honeycreepers.

This fellow flew right up close to us and was very curious about our group of bird watchers...
unfortunately I had forgotten to switch my camera to silent electronic shutter mode and when I fired a shot, the mechanical shutter sound scared him off.
Needless to say, I got some very disappointed looks from the group and apologized
profusely for my faux pas! :0(
