Start up a lawn mower anywhere in Hawaii and a Cattle Egret will probably appear shortly to munch up the disturbed insects.
Originally from Africa and Asia, they were introduced to the main Hawaiian Islands in 1959 to control insects that were plaguing cattle.
They could often be seen standing on the backs of cattle waiting to eat the insects that have been trodden up, hence their name.
As so often happens, the solution has become the problem. They have become pests themselves, predating the chicks and eggs of native birds.
