Japanese (Warbling) White-eye

Zosterops japonicus

This pretty and unique looking little songbird is one of the most common birds in Hawaii.
Introduced from Japan from 1920 to 1930, it spread rapidly across all the islands.
Unfortunately, the species is a carrier of avian malaria. The disease is deadly for
native forrest birds but the White-eye itself is resistant. Mosquitoes have help spread
the illness, threatening endangered native species.

Pretty and distinctive with those striking black-rimmed eyes.....its ability to carry avian malaria must have made it a concern....V
