These False Creek Energy Centre smoke stacks are only the tip of the energy iceberg.
While this could easily be mistaken for a public art installation with its led lights and changing colors, what lurks
underground beneath the Cambie Bridge is a state of the art energy recovery system that is a first of its kind in North America.
A district heating system that mines energy from the sewage system via a heat recovery pump,
much like one found in a refrigerator, and concentrates the energy to heat water for the local community.
This system saves about 70% on the energy bill for the local community of False Creek.
The system provides reasonably priced heat that has a small carbon footprint.
Iceland has the largest coverage of district heating systems at 95% with Denmark
coming in second at 60%.
