The last stop on our visit to L.A. this summer was The Getty Center.
An architectural marvel designed by Richard Meier, perched on a hilltop in the Santa Monica Mountains overlooking the Los Angeles landscape, the Pacific Ocean and the San Gabriel Mountains, it highlights both nature and culture.

This modernist complex exudes clean lines and elegant minimalism.
Natural light is one of the Getty Center's most important elements.
The many exterior walls of glass allow sunshine to illuminate the interiors.
A computer assisted system of louvers and shades adjust the balance of light indoors.

The exterior is clad with 16,000 tons of cleft-cut travertine stone from Bagni di Tivoli, Italy, 15 miles east of Rome.
Many of the stones revealed fossilized leaves, feathers and branches when they were split along their natural grain.
This beige colored stone catches the bright California light, reflecting sharply white during morning hours and emitting a honeyed warmth in the afternoon sun.

Due to the generosity of the J.P. Getty Foundation, admission is free to all visitors.
On this day, two photographic exhibitions were on display. Frozen Moments by Richard C. Miller, who is well known for his tri-color pigment carbo printing process and Women Twirling by Jo Ann Callis.
I was unable to obtain any images of these exhibits as security was upon me very quickly.
My only regret was that I had only two hours to spend before rushing off to catch our flight home.
