Alcatraz

On the last day of our visit, we took a cruise to a most fascinating place.

Located on Alcatraz Island (The Rock), 2.4Km off shore from San Francisco in San Francisco Bay, this U.S. maximum security federal prison was established in 1934. In its 29 year history, it held such infamous criminals such as Al Capone, Robert Franklin Stroud (the Birdman of Alcatraz) and George "Machine Gun" Kelly.

Due to its isolation from the outside world by the cold, strong, hazardous currents of the waters of San Francisco Bay, during its
29 years of operation, no prisoners had ever successfully escaped alive. 36 prisoners were involved in 14 attempts, two men
trying twice; 23 were caught, six were shot and killed during their escape and three got off the island but were lost at sea or
never found.

Some inmates described this as the cruelest prison of all since they could see the bright lights of San Francisco from
their cell, being so close and yet so far from freedom.
