Restaurante Cuca la Vaina

Castrillo de los Polvazares, León, Spain

Here is the entrance to the restaurant where our group went to lunch. We did not have a typical
meal at this restaurant. At this restaurant they sit large plates of "ham" on the table and you take
what you want. In addition to the typical cuts of ham that you would see in the United States
they were also serving pig's ear. There were small bones with bits of meat on them that appeared
to be pig's ankles. Finally there were the white squares which we determined must have been
cubes of pig fat. The really brave people took a bite of everything. I guess I am only a little
brave because I only tried a bite of the pig's ear. It has a strange consistency. The outer layer
was soft and slipped on the inner layer. The inner layer must have been a bit more rubbery, but it
does not stand out as clearly in my mind.
