Very occasionally in summer, heavy rains in the nearby Naukluft mountains causes the Tsauchab River to flow into the Namib desert.
With nowhere for the water to flow it creates a salt pan known as Sossusvlei. The pan even attracts birds for the few months that it is wet.
Most of the time however the pan is white and dry, but this provides a wonderful contrast with the surrounding red Namib dunes, the highest in the world.
At sunrise and sunset the desert takes on an incredible beauty which once seen is never forgotten!
In the distance you may well find a group of oryx wending their way up a sand dune in the twilight.

When I first visited Sossussvlei in 1988 there were only camping facilities available at Sesriem, (and we were the only visitors)!
Now one of Namibia's top tourist destinations I was concerned that it might have become spoilt from the crowds of visitors.
However I need not of feared: Its all remarkably well managed and there is of course infinite space for everyone!
