St Stephanos was built between the 10th and 12th centuries. Prior to this in AD 62, a church had been founded on the same site by St Bartholomew.
The sixteen sided tower which forms the structure for the church's dome, has stone reliefs of the disciples, saints and angels on the exterior.
The church is surrounded by a fortified Monastery with pleasant gardens and running water.
