Awe inspiring Machu Picchu is both a World Heritage Site and a (modern) 7th wonder of the world.
A very popular destination for visitors, in 2001 we decided to increase the thrill of visiting it by hiking the exhausting Inca Trail in 2001.
The Incas built Machu Picchu around 1450 but had already abandoned it by the time of the Spanish conquest.
It was brought to the attention of the outside world in 1911 by the American historian Hiram Bingham.
As with most Inca sites, the dry stone work is absolutely magnificent.
