Like the more famous Cappadocia in Turkey, Kandovan is a wonderful example of troglodyte homes, excavated inside volcanic pinnacles.
Beware that Kandovan is very popular with Iranian tourists who visit for the day, but it is quiet and peaceful from late afternoon.
There is an upmarket hotel just outside the main village, but a homestay is certainly the more authentic if rustic experience.
