One of the most wonderful things for me about ancient Persian history is that significant aspects of it have been recorded in bas reliefs.
Like ancient "photographs" combined with the historical propaganda, it allows us to connect with the past.
The city of Bishapur was built by the great Sassanian Emperor Shapur I in celebration of his victory over not one but three Roman emperors during his long reign(241-272 AD).
Shapur's triumph is also famously portrayed at Naqsh-e Rustam.
Emperor Valerian was taken prisoner and his legionaries forced into slavery. They built the famous water mills which can still be seen today at Shushtar.
These photos have been digitally enhanced like other bas relief photos on this site. The original image is also provided.
