The Ali Qapu Palace is located on the famous Esfahan Square built in Safavid times. The name means "The High Gate".

The talar (verandah) was the vantage point from which the Shah could look out on the square and even watch polo matches which took place in the square.

The interior is decorated with natural scenes of wildlife and birds. Many have been damaged over time but are now being restored.

Perhaps the most beautiful part of the palace is the famous "Musicians Room" which contains elaborate cut-out plaster work depicting all manner and shapes of vases. This was a place where women from the harem could sing without being heard in the square as a result of the sound proofing effects of the interior.
