Sunda Kelapa is Jakarta's old port. It is still used by traditional two masted wooden sailing ships (Pinisi) operating inter-island freight services. Nowadays the ships all seem to be motorized. A lot of the loading and unloading is done by hand although some of the ships now have small cranes for loading cement and the like. Cement is one of the main commodities loaded in Jakarta and palm oil one of the main commodities for the return trip. During this visit I saw cement being unloaded as well as cement being loaded which is more usual.

When I first visited nearly twenty years ago timber for the building industry was probably the main product delivered to Jakarta on the return trip. Trading in timber is now banned at the port.
