Two million years ago, shifts in the courses of the rivers which fed vast Lake Makgadikgadi led to the drying out that left the great salt-encrusted Makgadikgadi Pans (mainly Ntwetwe and Sowa) in its place. The famous granite formation out in Sowa Pan, studded with baobobs, which is Kubu Island, is sacred to the San, the oldest living population of humans in the world. The Makgadikgadi Pans are located in north central Botswana.
