Road work

Ucluelet,Vancouver Island

I included this rather boring looking picture because we couldn't figure out what in the world this fellow was doing out in the middle of nowhere with this contraption. It looked like a blade, not a mower or sweeper...and placed in the middle of the ditch.Maybe someone out there knows.

I worked on a road crew many years ago while in college in Washington State, just a bit south of Vancouver Island. This contraption is a flail chain mower. Something akin to the line trimmer you are probably familiar with for your yard. Under the shroud cover the flail chain mower uses several pieces of chain spun at a speed that will sheer off most small vegetation, but when in contact with objects like large rocks or boulders the chains will simply bounce off.
