This native Hawaaian explained to us the art of tapa,a 2 year process of working with the bark of appropriate trees,usually mulberry.It is pounded out until it is paper thin,dried and readied for painting.This fellow uses a dye obtained from coconut skin so that it will be permanent.Regular paints would either fade or run on the tapa.
