While visiting our daughter in Waterbury Center, VT on Saturday 3/8/14 we were fortunate to see the continuing Hawk Owl between 12:00-12:30 right where people have reported seeing it (many thanks to you all!) [Google maps location: 27 Gregg Hill Rd, Waterbury Center, VT].
It was active and cooperative – when we arrived it was perched on the phone/cable wires alongside the road and then flew to the tip of a tall dead tree atop the rise not far (50yds?) off the south side of the road. En route to the tree it flew toward the pine woods well beyond the tree, sparred very briefly with a couple of crows in the air (very cool) and then swooped back toward us and up onto the treetop from where it looked down on us like a king from his throne. A handful of other birders were there when we arrived. The bird was frequently scanning the area (head swiveling) yet appeared unconcerned with people approaching quite close both along the roadside and in the field. A very, very intriguing bird!
