While heading down the Beach road this morning to check out the boathole at the Gurnet, I rounded the corner past the Plum Hills parking pulloff and caught a glimps of a biggish brown bird with dark wings just before it dropped into the marsh at about 200 yds. The marsh grass is getting tall now and the bird completely disappeared. With so many Willets flying noisily about, a dark winged bird demanded attention, and I was pretty sure it had to be a Whimbrel.
I pulled ahead parallel to where it went down - now making it about 100yds off to the right. After scanning the area for a couple of minutes up popped its head and fortunately there's nothing tricky about this ID! It kept its head up long enough for me to get this shot for confirmation. Look in the upper center of this distant photo (375 mm zoom) to see its head.
