(My apologies for the focus - it was a long way off and this is the best I could do for a documentation shot)
This morning I found a Tricolored Heron on the Saquish marsh a half mile west of the Gurnet. As I was getting ready to get out of the car to try for a photo, it flew east about 100 yds and landed. About 5 minutes later it flew again, about the same distance and landed. I relocated it near the south end of the berm at Plum Hills and it flew again, this time all the way up to High Pines. When I got there, I spotted it across the water on the peninsula with a mixed bag of cormorants, eiders, gulls , and various shorebirds. It was there when i left the beach about 12:15. It seemed like it was migrating northward using a sort of puddle-jumping approach. Perhaps it will show up in Marshfield or Scituate later today or tomorrow.
