I originally mislabelled this as a Harbor Seal, but Peter Trull kindly pointed out that it "is more likely a one year old Harp Seal. The white pelage with black spots and a dark mantle is diagnostic."
The seal was right in the middle of the beach road and while at first I feared it might be stranded, I recalled having just seen a sign posted by the beach staff saying to leave seals alone -(they are rarely found on land at the upper end of the Bay). I encountered him as I headed southward and was able to drive past him, keeping reasonably clear. When I returned up the road about 30 minutes later, it was still there. The van carrying the Mass Audubon Friday Birders group had arrived a few moments earlier. The seal apparently felt it needed some privacy and so moved off the road and headed back into the Bay.
