Peregrine Falcon imm.- Brief encounter - Duxbury Beach MA Oct 4, 2010
On some high tides the water nearly reaches the beach road making a narrow strip of wrack and rocks that runs along the west side of the road between the bridge and the 1st crossover. With a strong northeast wind shorebirds tend to hunker down for shelter. This creates a good hunting situation for the occasional passing Peregrine. Today I had a brief encounter with an immature bird that let me get some decent shots from my car as I crept up on it. This series starts with spotting the bird and ends with it flying out over the Bay. In between a nice look at the immature head pattern, its huge blue-edged eye, its undermarkings as it lifted off, and dark back pattern showing some buffy ends to the wing coverts and tail feathers.
Running through these as a slideshow suggests the feel of the experience.
