Salt is a product of seawater, sunshine and wind. Seawater is pumped into condenser ponds and sits until fully saturated, then pumped into crysallizers where it remains under constant evaporation until it is ready for harvesting. Next the crysals are washed and dryed for several months. Finally, at 2000 tons an hour, it is loaded onto conveyor belts that lead out to the end of Salt Pier into ships for export for use in water softeners, and chemical, industrial, and ice control applications. Cargill Salt has 15 facilities in 3 different continents, over 80,000 employees, and the production capacity of 15 million tons, making it the 2nd largest producer of salt in the world. Also, over 10,000 pink flamingos reside on Bonaire. You can spot many of them in the bright pink, green, & brown water that make up the huge salt pans, dining on the algae that lend them their pink color.
