We have just returned from a 3 night stay in this lighthouse, as part of our honeymoon, on the west coast of Scotland. Surprisingly 2 out of 3 nights provided good light at sunset. The first I missed due to being 1/2 way through a romantic dinner. The second, dinner was postponed until AFTER sunset!
Taken on a tripod with a 3 stop ND filter to slow the exposure for the waves.
A further 2 Stop hard Graduated Neutral Density filter over the sky and lighthouse, to balance the exposure and prevent the lighthouse from blowing.
Taken with a new 5DII in a rush (before the sun was lost) I ended up capturing this in jpg rather than RAW. My 1DsIII doesn't require SET to be pressed after changing the quality. The 5DII DOES! Still, it proves that in camera jpg is of great quality, and the importance on getting everything perfect in-camera on location is paramount. No post processing required, except dust spots removal.
