Fall Found at Lost Maples

Lost Maples is a very special area of some 2,000 acres set aside for the protection of the largest single forest of Bigtooth Maple trees in Texas. The forest is tucked in and around a "hidden" canyon and along the Sabinal river. Many come from miles in Texas to experience the fall colors as the leaves of the Maple trees turn color. A few other trees including some Oak trees also join in the display of fall beauty.

What a great gallery! I was lucky enough to visit in 1997 to the the Golden-cheeked Warbler which luckily I did manage to see. The next trip will be in fall - no warblers maybe but to see the trees you've captured so wonderfully! BV! Regards Dave.

From Austin to Lost Maples: US290 to Fredericksburg, 16 south to Kerrville, 27 west to Ingram, 39 west to 187 and it's about 10 miles to the entrance on your right. Go on a week day or be there early on the weekend (before 10am).

Lost Maples is about 85 miles northwest of San Antonio near the town of Vanderpool. Visit the TPWD website for details at:

This is not one of the best years for fall color at Lost Maples.
If you do plan a trip, I would recommend just after Thanksgiving.
We might see a bit more color in certain areas, but it will be
spotty. With the coming forecast of more rain this week the danger
is that more leaves might have fallen by then.

I say every yr Im going to Lost Maples!The best color I have seen in TX this yr.
