Oxara River

The Oxara river flows through the broad plain past the Thingvellir tectonic rift on its way to Lake Žingvallavatn. Branches of its glacial water course through rugged fissures in the volcanic rock. The original Thingvellir Church was built on this site in 1000 AD when Christianity was established in Iceland. The present church was constructed in 1859. By tradition, a coin dropped from this bridge brings good luck if you can see it land on the bottom. My daughter saw her 50 Kronar coin land.
The whole Thingvellir area is a national park.
