The log schoolhouse was built in 1882 and served the community as both school and Baptist church. It was in use continuously until 1935 when the area bacame part of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
It's a relatively easy 6/10 mile hike from the Metcalf Bottoms picnic area to the school but there is a steep ridge to cross.
There are many remnants of old pioneer cabins, from stone walls to piles of old fireplace and chimney stones along the way.
