On the morning of Sept. 20, 1863, the decisive action of the battle occurred near the Brotherton cabin (The original was destroyed in the fighting but this one was rebuilt after the fighting.) Confederate troops commanded by Gen. Bushrod Johnson broke through the Union lines in fierce fighting, forcing the Federals to retreat.
