A battery of artillery under the command of Capt. Cuthbert H. Slocumb was in the thick of the fighting on Sept. 19th & 20th. The battery suffered the loss of 1 officer and 10 men killed; 20 wounded; 3 horses killed and 5 wounded in withstanding heavy Union fire.. The battery fired 562 rounds on the 20th alone.
