The Cataloochee Valley is located near Waynesville, NC, in the Eastern section of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Long used by the Cherokee as a hunting ground, it was first settled by pioneer families in the early 1800's. Elk were reintroduced into the valley in 2001.
