Hortobagy National Park

This is one of Europe's best birdwatching regions: a vast protected area of grassland (puszta), wetland and marsh. We visited several blinds and platforms, and took a narrow gauge railway into the fish pond area of the park, and saw hundreds upon hundreds of birds: great white egret, purple heron, graylag goose, various grebes and ducks, buzzard, stone chat, tree sparrow, cormorant, white stork, lapwing, collared dove, pied wagtail, rook, and red-footed falcon.

Birdwatching platforms such as this dot the park, and are often adorned with useful signage (in Hungarian, English and German).
