Closely following the legendary Chisholm Trail, the rail line was built across the Cherokee Outlet onto the Red River by the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railway in 1889-92. After the Rock Island ceased operation in 1980, the railroad was purchased by the State of Oklahoma. It was leased and operated by the Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railway until their merger into the Union Pacific Railroad in 1989.
