A sign of the approaching winter is this White-crowned Sparrow (Zonotricha leucophrys) observed 25 October 2004. Another winter resident, the Slate-colored Darked-eyed Junco (Junco hyemalis) was observed only minutes earlier. Both birds will remain until late April when they will trek toward the Arctic Circle for nesting.
