German Iris

Oakdale Twp., Noble Co., Okla.

Although not a wildflower, the German or Bearded Iris (Iris germanica) is found growing wild near many abandoned farmsteads throughout rural Oklahoma. One of the first things settlers planted was the easily transplanted and strudy German Iris. The plants have long survived the homesteaders who once welcomed the flowers early each spring.
