The Wheeler Geologic Area is located in the La Garita Wilderness of Southern Colorado. The area was first designated as a National Monument in 1908, but its designation was rescinded in 1950 and it was tranferred to the US Forest Service due to its remoteness and the difficulty to reach it. Today, you can reach the area either by a 7 mile hike or by a 14 mile rough 4WD road. We chose to do the hike and camped overnight in the area.
