Technical Notes

The Equipment:
Body: Nikon D200
Lenses: Nikkor 70-200mm f/2.8G ED-IF AF-S VR, Nikkor 17-55mm f/2.8G ED-IF AF-S DX, Nikkor 60mm f/2.8D AF Micro, Sigma 10-20mm f/4-5.6 EX DC HSM, Nikon TC 17e II Telekonverter
Filter: B+W KSM MRC slim circular polarizer
Storage: Sandisk Extreme III 4 GB cards

The Shooting:
Best light conditions in early morning (just before and during sunrise) and late afternoon (the hour before and after sunset).
Weather conditions were pretty good and supportive to our intent:
Misty mornings and dusks and clear sunny skies all days, only slightly overcast - except one day with a storm front coming up, producing a fantastatic warm light below a pretty dark sky.
All shots in NEF format (Nikons RAW format) and JPEG Basic (in order to quickly select the good shots from the bad ones).
All shots handheld (but have ordered a tripod for the next trip).

Camera settings:
Exposure mode set to aperture priority, I tried to keep ISO values as low as possible (at 100 most of the time), exposure bias value is - as my personal default - always set to -1/3.
White balance set to flash on most of the images in order to get more warmer tones.

For D200 users who may be interested in...
Shooting Menu / Image Optimization settings with following values:
"Custom": +1 Image Sharpening, + Tone Compensation, III Color Mode, + Saturation, +6 Hue Adjustment

other sizes: small medium original auto

To Pierre:
For the Image Optimization settings in the Shooting Menu the answer is yes. When I shoot in color then I use these user-defined settings - or I shoot in B&W mode. For the exposure bias value setting is per default set to -1/3. It's an old habit deriving from the days when I shot with slide materials and "analogue" cameras; but, of course, I change this whenever it seems appropriate to change it, e.g. when using spot metering instead of matrix. White balance is normally set to Cloudy, but for the Tuscany shots I decided to go for more warmer tones, therefore Flash.
Thanks a lot for your support! - and pls let me know how you 105 VR micro.
Cheers,
rhett

Thanks for this. I like your shots very much, very inspiring. I'm using the same material since 11/06. Next I'm going to buy the Nikkor 105 mm VR f 2.8 micro.
I'll try yours settings.
Nice WE
Pierre
