Surf Scoters

Coyote Point, San Mateo, California

Melanitta perspicillata

This scoter flock was located along the breakwater at Coyote Point. Individual scoters had moved away from the flock and were diving for food near some old pilings. Scoters feed primarily on mussels and crustaceans but ocassionally plants as well. Along the open coast, scoters have the habit of diving though the breaking surf.
