Fledgling Cooper's Hawks

Ron Wolf, a nature and wildlife photographer extraordinaire ( http://www.flickr.com/photos/rwolf/ ), reported a Cooper's Hawk nest, with 4 Cooper's Hawk fledglings, at the Arastradero Preserve in Palo Alto, California. Ron provided detailed directions to allow other interested birders and photographers to make the short hike in to view and photograph the fledglings. During this particular visit, my second, there was only 1 fledgling in the nest but the other 3 were on various limbs in the trees surrounding the nest. This fledgling was eating something for the entire 40 minutes my wife and I were taking photos but it wasn't until I viewed the images on our computer that I realized that it had been feasting on an unfortunate California Ground Squirrel. Actually, it may have been the last of the siblings to dine on the squirrel because the others were content to remain in the limbs around the nest and made no attempt to share in the meal.
