Apes are no toys

Monkeys in captivity move me like no other animal.
In their eyes I see their immense grief, their friendship, their patience, their doubts about their fate and their craving for freedom.
It is inconceivable what we do to them.
This makes me so goddamn sad and angry.
Without any exception we should set them all back in their own world as soon as possible!

A wonderful image, and a moving commentary, Regi.
You open up a big topic.
Yes, it is troubling that many zoos do not provide adequate space and stimulation for their animals.
However, zoos do educate us to recognise animals as sentient beings deserving of respect.
There may be few other ways our urbanised societies could learn such a lesson.
It follows that the environments in which these animals naturally live should also be respected.
Sadly, we are slow to come to terms with such issues.

Regi this is outstanding ! I agree with you totally. We visited Howletts in Kent, and although a lovely place, that sadness was there to see..
