Long-tailed Duck

Diving ducks like the Long-tailed Duck are usually far out on the river out of range of a camera and sometimes even out of range of binoculars. When I saw a beautiful male Long-tailed Duck in a 325 by 600 foot duck pond my jaw went to the ground and my eye went to the camera. At one point the duck was within 20 feet of the shore! Seeing a Long-tailed Duck up-close, a species that until now had only been an image in my spotting scope, was a real exciting event and likely to be the highlight of my fall birding season. I don't think this event will be repeated again soon!
