Another local lockstation that I had never visited until recently. I first visited it last weekend but once again, circumstances kept me from getting many photos, so I revisited the lockstation again this morning for another try (in different light). I arrived just in time to see three larger boats and a canoe heading through these electric locks. Almost all of the locks along the Rideau Canal are operated manually with hand winches, but this lockstation along with 2 others, Newboro and Combined (Smiths Falls) are operated electrically with hydraulic mechanisms. This was done back in the 60s in an attempt to modernize operations of the canal, but I'm guessing these conversions were halted to preserve the historical charm of these lockstations. The controls are housed in the metal pedestal shown in this photo next to the open lock while the old hand winch remains in place for historical purposes (although withouts its chains and pushbar). In this photo the 3 boats had cleared the locks and were on their way to the next lockstation (Hog's Back). I later caught up with them at Hartwells Locks (photos coming another day!).
